“Women At Work” | Natasha Brown (@NBrownInk) of Think Brown Ink
I want to thank you folks so so so much for supporting the “Women at Work” series! It’s been going great week after week! And now … oh, I’ve got something great for you!
BOY! Have I been waiting to share this!
Natasha Brown is absolutely one of my FAVORITE people to follow on Twitter! I feel like we’ve been TOTAL bffs in a past life!
1. What is your dream job?
Right now, I’m living my dream on a small scale, per se. My dream is to become a knowledgeable and well-respected communications consultant, published (and successful) author of both fiction and non-fiction, while continuing to grow Think Brown INK and serving as a mentor and philanthropist. My dream job is one that doesn’t feel like a job at all, it just comes naturally.
2. What industry is most of your work concentrated in?
Most of my work is in the entertainment industry as a communications consultant. As the Founder/CEO of Think Brown INK, I serve as publicist/manager to a celebrity fashion designer, 9-year-old actor, an author, DJ and as the executive producer and publicist of a radio show. In addition, I co-chair or serve as publicist for various events around the nation and in Washington, DC. I’m an adjunct writing professor and, most-recently, the host of The Build Up!, a radio show on EliteDCRadio.com catered to young and savvy entrepreneurs. All of my work is centered in communications and using the gifts that God blessed me with to help others achieve their career and life goals.
3. Got a side hustle? How does it affect your daily schedule?
This is a great question! My main hustle is a side hustle, and scheduling is definitely a challenge sometimes. I’m working on a book and several personal projects that have become increasingly difficult to fit in. It’s hard to take time away from client projects to focus on my own, but this is the life I chose, so I have to go with the punches and fit things in where I can.
4. Discuss your path to where you are now in your career? Has it been planned? Were there unexpected turns? My path was unplanned and this is definitely unexpected. I went to college and majored in communications with a minor in journalism, and I expected to either pursue a career in journalism or writing for television. After I graduated from Morgan State University in 2003, I began to freelance as a journalist and on the sets of various television and movie sets. I then moved into marketing communications, public relations and PR work. I realized a few things from my many experiences: 1. That I’m truly fascinated by all aspects of communications, from writing to producing TV and radio, and 2. That I wanted to be behind the scenes. I found my niche after working for various organizations, and decided to create an agency that brought each of my loves together. Think Brown INK is now a complete communications agency, serving clients with public relations, marketing video production and directing, brand management and marketing communications. It’s great because each day, there is a new project and many new challenges.
5. What have you discovered about yourself along the journey?I’ve discovered that I have creativity-induced A.D.D.! Honestly, I have so many thoughts in my head and so many ideas that I sometimes have to bring myself back to focus on the project at hand. I’m always thinking bigger and plotting on how to maximize the impact of any program.
6. If you knew in the beginning what you know now, would you have done anything differently?Yes, I would have studied more business management and connected with other publicists much earlier in my career. I’ve been able to establish some strategic partnerships that have become very valuable, but I would have maintained each contact that I established while working in TV, film and journalism.
7. Describe a day in your life.I wake up and eat breakfast really early. I get on Twitter, and see what’s new in the world. I check on client news feeds, while watching the news and then I start to grind out my day. Each morning I decide where I’m going to work from that day and I get dressed so I can be ready for any last-minute meetings or requests. My nights are typically reserved for client meetings and events. I also catch up with my family and friends during the evening and I prepare for the next day. Each day is different, but every day is a grind.
8. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? 10 years?
In the next five to 10 years I see myself overseeing the day-to-day operations of Think Brown INK from locations around the world. I see myself becoming a thought leader in this field and mentor to students. I would like to be a published author by that time and have a husband and maybe a child or two. I see myself happy and settled, with the time and monetary resources to give back to organizations that I love.
