Sara Bareilles “Fairytale” Lyrics | “A Room of Our Own” Re-Cap
This is actually two separate blogs … but somehow … in my head … they’re related. As they all are.
Yesterday marked the first “A Room of Our Own.“ And it was REALLY FANTASTIC! Like … everything I hoped and imagined it would be: an open space, freedom of speech, honesty … so much more.
Perhaps next time, I’ll share pics and video … but, considering the “safe space” nature of it … I’m not sure that that will happen … well at least not until everyone’s acclimated.

THE POINT
We all left with two assignments to complete … or maybe one assignment with two parts. We must describe ONE EXPERIENCE in two different voices: one voice being an imitation of the author we brought to share, the 2nd, our own.
FOR INSTANCE: One description of your family picnic using Erykah Badu’s voice … and one using your own. Got it? Good.
THE REAL POINT
I shared a portion of Asha Bandele’s “Home” …. and now, I’m currently trying to finish writing, in her voice, a description of how I learned to love … an historically grounded, enlightening, somewhat Afrocentric, reflective voice … so that I can then begin to use my own.
The point of the “how I learned to love” piece, no matter whose voice I use … is that I learned to believe in magic and fairy tales and I learned that you could only receive those things through sometimes giving up portions of yourself (and I’m not saying this is right … I’m saying this is what I’ve been taught. We know there’s a difference).
And thinking about fairy tales always gets me to thinking about Sara Bareilles …
Worry bout the maiden though you know
She’s only waiting spent the whole life being graded on the sanctity of patience and a dumb
Appreciation
But the story needs some mending and a better happy ending
Cause I don’t want the next best thing
No no I don’t want the next best thing
And I’m not really sure how these posts are connected … except for that … maybe … I only share because it’s not easier, but safer, for others to speak our feelings.
you stay cool. i’ll stay kholi <3.
